Faith Formation Registration

The goal of catechesis, i.e., religious education and faith formation, is “to bring about in the believer an ever more mature faith in Jesus Christ, a deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and a firm commitment to follow him.” (NDC 1.19A) Therefore, the focus of the Faith Formation ministry is to nurture life-long faith development and Christian discipleship. We provide learning and formation opportunities to engage adults in all stages of faith development and children of all ages in learning more about Christ Jesus and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we work to help parishioners of all ages to actively live their faith in all their daily activities.

The passing on of our Catholic heritage depends on the witness of adults in living their faith and continuing their own learning and faith development. The quality of religious education and faith formation for children and youth is directly related to an adult community that is well-formed in the Catholic faith. Thus, our primary focus is on adult faith formation. Many adults long for a deeper personal experience of God and involvement in a community of faith. We provide opportunities for learning, spirituality, Bible study, prayer, and participation in service opportunities to satisfy their spiritual hunger and to talk about the importance of Jesus Christ in their lives.

Under the umbrella of adult faith formation, the formation of catechists and catechetical assistants is a priority. Their personal faith and ministerial development is vital for the quality and success of our church’s mission to “go and make disciples.”

As we grow in relationship with God and knowledge of and in love with Jesus Christ, we ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit to guide and nurture the faith development and discipleship of the community of St Robert of Newminster Church.

Faith Formation sessions for 2019-20 will begin the week of September 29, 2019

FOCUS OF FAITH FORMATION MINISTRIES

St. Robert of Newminster Church’s Faith Formation Team is committed to providing resources and opportunities for the development of faith for persons of all ages. We take our directive from the Church, which says that “the definitive aim of catechesis (religious education) is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ.” (National Directory for Catechesis, 19B) Through our ministry, we aim to assist people of all ages to grow in knowledge of the Catholic faith, participate more explicitly in the liturgy and sacraments, live according to Jesus’ moral teaching, become people of prayer, and participate actively in the life and mission of the Church by becoming missionary disciples in their families, communities and world.

As we grow in relationship with God and knowledge of and in love with Jesus Christ, we ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit to guide and nurture the faith development and discipleship of the community of St Robert of Newminster Church.

SUNDAY PRESCHOOL – AGES 3 TO KINDERGARTEN

Sunday Preschool provides the opportunity for children ages 3 to kindergarten to develop an awareness of God’s presence and love in their lives, their families, their community, and the world around them. Sessions are offered on Sundays during the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses.

For more information on Sunday Preschool, contact Karen Ottenweller, Pastoral Associate for Early Childhood Ministry, ext 132.

BE MY DISCIPLES – GRADES 1-4

Be My Disciples offers engaging lessons that lead young disciples to higher levels of moral thinking and a deeper initiation into a life of prayer. Through exploration, discovery, and decision-making, children are invited to accept the challenge to follow Jesus and learn and practice the skills needed to be active disciples.

The BE MY DISCIPLES WEBSITE offers exciting resources to support catechists, parents, and students with Be My Disciples.

For more information on Be My Disciples, contact Jolana Peard, Pastoral Associate for Elementary Ministry, ext 123.

The St Mary’s Press Website offers more resources and information for catechists, parents and students.

EDGE – GRADES 6-7

EDGE nights are a combination of games, skits, talks, small groups, faith formation and fun. One unique aspect of EDGE is the fact that its focus is relational ministry. Each week participants break into small groups and dig deeper into that night’s topic. EDGE helps youth engage with the entire community by working with dedicated adult and FRONTLINE high school student leaders.

For more information on EDGE, contact Christine McCarty, Pastoral Associate for Youth Ministry (Gr 6-8), ext 124.

CALLED TO MERCY – GRADE 8

Confirming Young People for a Mission of Witness meets teens where they are: anytime, anywhere. Ten online learning modules and five gathered community-building sessions offer engaging, relevant, and deeply reflective opportunities.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY – GRADES 9-12

This ministry supports and encourages our youth to develop a deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ, family, and friends. It fosters involvement in church and community through prayer and worship, catechesis, service, and social activities.

Youth in grades 6-12 are encouraged to participate in the 6 p.m. Sunday Mass as altar servers, ushers, lectors, or choir members. Youth in grades 10-12 may participate as Eucharistic ministers.

On Sunday evenings after the 6:00 p.m. Mass, high school youth gather for evening prayer, talk about specific topics chosen by them, and eat dinner. For exact schedule, watch the bulletin and parish website or sign up to receive email communications.

For additional information on High School Youth Ministry, contact Michael Renauer, Pastoral Associate for Youth Ministry (Gr 9-12), ext. 118.

HOME FAITH FORMATION

A home formation option is available for families preferring to do faith formation at home.

St. Roberts uses Pflaum Publishing’s Gospel Weeklies for grades 1-7, providing parents with a weekly teaching plan based on the Sunday Scripture readings. Children’s flyers and engaging activities make Gospel Weeklies a great resource for growing faith in the home.

Learners in grade 8 participate in the Called to Mercy self-study program.

FIRE: FAMILY-CENTERED FAITH FORMATION

Whether with your own family or a group of families, fan the flame of faith through prayer, Scripture study, and activities. FIRE is for families/households of all ages and styles: families with children, married couples, empty-nesters, seniors. The process consists of at-home activities, group gatherings (if desired), and parish on-site seasonal events. Consider FIRE if your family’s busy schedule keeping you from participating in weekly formation processes, but you would like to be active in exploring your Catholic faith.

For more information on FIRE, contact Teri Burns, 616-676-9111 ext 115.
